California is also known as the Golden State. This name derives from the California Gold Rush, which attracted thousands of immigrants in the mid-19th century. For many of them, the Californian dream of quick wealth came true. Today, with nearly 40 million inhabitants, California is the most populous state in the U.S. The capital of California, Sacramento, is located off the coast and is a relatively small town with around 500,000 inhabitants. All the large cities and densely populated metropolitan areas are situated along the Pacific coast. By far, the largest city in California is Los Angeles. The megacity is home to about 18 million people, making it the second largest city in the United States.

As far as economic performance and productivity are concerned, the Golden State is also the leader in the U.S. Besides agriculture, technology, science, and trade, media and tourism play an important role. If it were a country, California would be the 5th largest economy in the world, larger than the United Kingdom or France. Silicon Valley is known all over the world. This region, located in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California, is the global leader in high technology, venture capital, innovation, and social media. The biggest companies that have settled in Silicon Valley are Apple, Google, Facebook, Wells Fargo, and Visa.
