We are at the Big Apple, otherwise known as New York City, which is the largest city in the United States. There are about twenty million people living in Greater New York, the cultural and economic center of the United States. In 1626, the Dutch bought the island of Manhattan from the Native Americans for a ridiculously low price, and it was there that they founded the trading center of New Amsterdam. Around fifty years later, the British captured the island and called it New York in honor of the Duke of York
Today, New York consists of five very different districts: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The area of New York is about three times the size of Vienna’s. The island of Manhattan is still the city center. Nearly all the important sights and skyscrapers are located here. Manhattan is still the most densely populated island in the world with 28,000 people per square kilometer.
