Chinatown is the exotic quarter of San Francisco. Nearly 100,000 people from East Asia give off the flair of China here. Curved pagoda roofs, street lights with dragon tails, and billboards in Chinese writing characterize this quarter. Then we board a cable car and drive up the steep California street. The pleasure is most intensive when you stand on the step and lean with your upper body out of the car. The cable cars are a distinctive trademark of San Francisco. They are driven by a steel cable, which moves at a constant speed under the tracks. The cable car drivers have to work hard because they have to latch and release the cars with pliers.
As a highlight of our stay in San Francisco, we visit the symbol of the city: the Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge is named after the Golden Gate, which is the San Francisco Bay’s only opening out to the ocean. The simple method of construction suits perfectly to the landscape. The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the largest suspension bridges in the world. The 2.7 kilometers long bridge components dangle from two steel cables. The bridge is important for the connection to the north. Each year, no less than forty million vehicles drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. Even though there are six lanes available, there are daily traffic jams in both directions. Slowly, the night is coming, and with a sad heart, we say goodbye to San Francisco and to the United States of America.
